TRF’s Week 17 Playoff Pontificator©

Joy to the world fellow Pillagers!

In the final installment of TRF’s Playoff Pontificator we will go through each of Oakland’s AFC Seeding scenarios.  This way, you can pick your favorite outcome and root for it to come to fruition this Sunday afternoon.

Oakland as Seed 1:  “Scenario 1A”

For this to happen, the Raiders and Dolphins must win.

Another game that comes into play here is SD-KC.  In Scenario “1A” SD beats KC.  If this happens, KC gets the 6 seed and Miami slips into Seed 5.

Then what?

Well, NE(2) and Oakland(1) get byes.

For the AFC Wildcard matchups we would have:

KC(6) @ PITT(3)    and    Miami(5) @ Hou(4)

In the Divisional round, Oak gets KC or the MIA-HOU winner (Pitt not possible).

Oakland as Seed 1:  “Scenario 1B”

Same as 1A except here SD loses to KC, giving KC the 5 seed and Miami Seed 6.

Again, NE(2) and Oakland(1) get byes.

For the AFC Wildcard matchups we have:

MIA(6) @ PITT(3)    and    KC(5) @ Hou(4)

In this case, it’s likely that both Seeds 3 and 5 emerge victorious.

If this assumption is correct, for the Divisional round Oakland would see KC.

Next up. …

Oakland as Seed 2:  “Scenario 2A”

For this to happen, the Raiders record is one game worse than New England’s and one better than KC’s.

In Scenario “2A”, Oak, NE, and KC lose.  If this happens, KC gets the 6 seed and Miami slips into Seed 5.

As before, NE(1) and Oakland(2) get byes.

For the AFC Wildcard matchups we once again would have:

KC(6) @ PITT(3)    and    Miami(5) @ Hou(4)

In this case, in the Divisional round, Oakland (now Seed 2) would see PITT or the MIA-HOU winner (no chance for a KC-OAK matchup).

Oakland as Seed 2:  “Scenario 2B”

For this to happen, the Raiders record is one game worse than New England’s and one better than KC’s.

In Scenario “2B” Oak, and NE win.  The KC-SD game would be irrelevant.  Here KC gets the 5 Seed and Miami is Seed 6.

Once again, NE(1) and Oakland(2) get byes.

For the AFC Wildcard matchups we once again would have:

MIA(6) @ PITT(3)    and    KC(5) @ Hou(4)

For the Divisional round, Oakland’s most likely opponent would be PITT while NE would likely face off vs. KC.

So ok….

What if the unthinkable happens and the Raiders end up with the dreaded 5th Seed! (Note: Seed 6 is impossible)

The good news here is that the only way this comes to pass is if we lose in Denver and KC beats SD.  Several online sites put the likelihood of that happening between 25-28%.

Lets have a closer look…

Oakland as Seed 5:  “Scenario 5”

As noted above, the Raiders have to lose and KC wins for this to play out.  If it does, the Wildcard matchups would be:

NE(1) and KC(2) get byes.

For the AFC Wildcard matchups we would have:

MIA(6) @ PITT(3)    and    OAK(5) @ Hou(4)

If Oakland makes it to the Divisional round, they would likely visit Boston.  No, not an ideal place to play but fitting that it would be in the Divisional round just like the last time we visited Foxboro on that snowy fateful night 15 years ago.

Could we beat them on their home ice?  Hell yes.  Anything can happen. Also, if we make it that far, it means MM14 has proved the doubters wrong and is better than expected by some.

Well Nation, that’s it for now.  I think most of our fan base is far too despondent.  We lost our leader, but we have not lost our way.  It is time to keep the faith.

Matty Not-So-Nice is a gutty competitor who has had 3 more years under his belt (watching Carr), a MUCH better OL, superior WRs and a young and dynamic RB corps and an opportunistic defense surrounding him.  He also has a coaching staff that is light years ahead of the dumpster fire that was guiding him as a rookie.  Despite all that he still showed fire and promise.

I for one stand behind the Irishman and believe that he has what it takes to navigate this ship to its final destination at docking station Lombardi Number 4.
