Last week the Raiders six game winning streak came to an end in the bitter Kansas City cold. This week the next six game winning streak hopefully begins.
George W Bush was President. There was no Facebook or IPhones…
It was 1990, and Tecmo Bowl had just come out for Nintendo. I was 10 at that time, and I was living in Lima, Peru, and somehow I had come across a copy of the game. Until then, the only thing I knew of football was that it was played with a weird shaped ball.
BBQ was good.
First time at Arrowhead, nostalgic stadium.
Most of the fans were courteous, and some not so much.
In early August it was believed that the Raiders weakest link would be it’s newly formed defense…
We were there…watching. Hell, the whole world was watching…
It was loud. REALLY REALLY LOUD. If you were there, there was a feeling of confidence and swagger that began in the parking lots, poured into the stadium, and spilled all over the field. The decibel level was palpable from the opening kickoff to the final kneel down. Not only did the Oakland Raiders show, but their devoted Nation of plundering piratic zealots did too. What ensued was nothing short of a demonstration of violence and strength that left their opponents ragged and sitting alone in 3rd place in the toughest division in football. The pirate ship is back, and the crew is pissed off.
My how the wait for this seasons kickoff seems so distant ago. For months in the offseason we spend time with fellow fans, both on social media and in our daily lives, debating everything possible from who the team will target in free agency, to everyone and their mom producing mock drafts that often have as much accuracy as a skeet shooter in a micro-burst. Several short weeks later and here we are at the halfway point of the season preparing for a home match up against a division rival for first place in the restored AFC West.
Last week nobody guessed the score exactly, but who would’ve thought the game was going to be THAT crazy? The Raiders? Making things interesting? C’mon!
